Prospector, captain, mayor, trader, settler, craftsman, builder - which roles will you play in the new world?
- Players: 3-5
- Play Time: 90 mins
- Ages: 12+
The players are plantation owners in Puerto Rico in the days when ships had sails.
Growing up to five different kind of crops they must try to run their colony more efficiently than their close competitors; growing crops, developing useful buildings, deploying their colonists to best effect, selling crops at the right time, and, most importantly, shipping their goods back to Europe for maximum benefit.
The core of the game is the seven different role cards, each of which can only be selected once per turn, and allows for a particular action to be carried out the Mayor handles the arrival of new colonists, the Captain allows the shipping of goods back to Europe and so on.
However the trick is that the selected roles doesn't just benefit the player who chooses it rather all players get a chance to carry out the action, with a special perk for the selecting player.
This keeps everyone involved all the time rather then waiting for their turn to come around, and also makes the choice of which role to choose (and when) crucial lest you help your opponents far more then you.
The subtle interaction of the different roles coupled with the variety of strategies shaped by your building choices adds up to a game both deep but also simple to learn and fast to play, perfect for many different groups.
